In this book Temple shares with us how her thought processes work. She is a visual learner and thinker, and describes how that affected her growing up and even today. There is much valuable information about sensory processing, developing relationships and empathy, which is useful in understanding people with ASDs and how we can help them in their learning. Temple includes an informative chapter on traditional medications and how they have been helpful to her and others.
The Mind Tree by Tito Rajarshi Mukhopadhyay
In this book, Tito allows us a rare glimpse into the mind of someone with severe autism. He writes beautiful prose and poetry. His mother read to him constantly when he was little, and developed a way to teach him to write and type by physically motoring him through the motions. Tito’s descriptions of his feelings and what it is like to be trapped in a body that he cannot easily control help us to understand why some people with autism act as they do. Tito’s book is a great reminder that you cannot assume what is going on inside the head of someone who is unable to communicate.
